LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE REPORT, DECEMBER 28, 2011
1. The hazardous Maple at 272 was removed and major pruning of a Maple at 306 was done.
2. A test is being conducted on the roofs of 274 and 275 to determine if the growth of new moss next year has been controlled.
3. The Landscape/Tree funds for 2011 have been spent.
LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE REPORT, NOVEMBER 16, 2011
1.
Members of the Landscape Committee are Karen Bayers, Susan
Howell, Bernice Leamy, Gloria Schmidt, Judy Snyder, and Sandy Waldman.
Thank you for your interest and efforts in maintaining the
Devonshire plantings and for planting the bulbs donated by
2. The major focus of the Landscape Committee the past few years has been on the trees. This year, approximately 85% of the funds available for landscaping have been spent on tree maintenance, removal, and replacement. The balance was used for shrub replacement and a small renovation. With over $6000 of tree work postponed until 2012, next year will be similar.
Tree limbs must be pruned from above roofs and near chimneys, and broken and dead branches removed. Dead and hazardous trees, and often their stumps, must be removed.
Although we are spending significant funds on trees, we must recognize their environmental importance. They beautify the landscape and help maintain the value of our homes. Less obvious, in the process of photosynthesis, trees, and all green plants, produce all the oxygen we breathe. In doing so, they use carbon dioxide from the air. They provide shade, reduce wind, moderate temperatures, reduce noise, and slow storm water runoff.
3. The Landscape Improvement Budget for 2012 has been increased by $3,360. We thank the Council for recognizing the importance of our plantings and providing these additional funds.
4. There were no major landscape problems from the October 29th snowfall nor from Hurricane Irene or Tropical Storm Lee.
5.
Residents often want to make changes in the plantings in the
Common Areas outside their homes.
Before you do, please read Section B, “Exterior of Buildings”,
Items 3a and 3c, and Section D, “Grounds and Walks”, in the “Rules of
the
6. Hershey’s Mill Landscaping has asked that we remove annuals and cut back perennials in the beds at our homes by the end of the month. This will facilitate thorough leaf removal during the final clean-up which begins in December. Planters should be moved to a storage area for the winter.
George Manaker, Landscape Chairman
LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE REPORT, OCTOBER 25, 2011
1. With the exception of one unit, work approved on Proposal #5541, Spring Walk-through, has been completed.
2. The balance in Landscape/Tree funds is approximately $1,000.
3. With the record rainfall this year, moss has become a problem on some heavily shaded roofs and should be addressed because it shortens the life of the shingles and fosters the growth of fungi (mold). Several methods of control/eradication are available.
4. The Master Association has approved clearing the land this winter along 352 at the curve as you approach Hershey’s Mill from Paoli Pike. Some grass and a suitable low-maintenance planting will be installed in the area. Appropriate Hershey’s Mill signage will complete the project.
George Manaker, Chairman
Landscape Committee Report - September 27, 2011
1. There were no landscape problems from either Hurricane Irene or Tropical Storm Lee. No trees or large branches came down. Twigs and small branches were quickly cleaned up by Hershey's Mill Landscaping.
2. Renovation of the plantings in front of 275-276 has been completed.
3. Landscape requests from two homeowners were approved. They will pay costs.
4. Tree removal approved: Pine behind 300. Because of the tree's location, Village will split the cost of removal with the golf course. Our share is $438.00.
5. Current balance in Landscape/Tree and Genuardi funds: $2,100.00.
6. Projects/Removals on hold:
Hazardous Maple in front of 272 $965.00
Dead limbs on Oaks behind 307 $?
Holly at 288 $?
Stump behind 341 $420.00
Balance of Spring Walk $5,600.00
Landscape Committee Report - August 23, 2011
1. The work approved on Project 5541 (Spring Walk-through), with the exception of the renovations of the plantings at 275-276, has been completed.
2. Pruning approved and completed in the past month:
286-287: Remove broken branch $175.00
372: Cut down small tree 115.00 (Owner will pay half)
374 (rear): Prune to clear roof 360.00
$595.00
Current balance in Landscape/Tree funds: $2,800.00
3. Approved Landscape Request: 357. Owner will pay cost.
4. Pruning/Removals awaiting available funding:
Dead limbs on Oaks behind 307 $?
Stump behind 341 $420.00
Holly at 288 $?
Hazardous Maple in front of 272 $965.00
5. Nutsedge has become conspicuous in many lawn areas in the Village. With our focus this year on trees, funds are not available to chemically treat this invasive weed. The usual lawn herbicides do not control it. Residents are asked not to pull or dig the plants as this leaves tubers and rhizomes in the soil. They will re-grow and further spread the plant. When the weather cools, the sedge will go dormant.
6. There is a coyote in the Mill. They pray on wild animals such as mice, rabbits and other small animals. In view of that fact, pets, especially small dogs and cats, should always be on a leash and never put outside alone.
George Manaker, Chairman
Landscape Committee Report - July 26, 2011
1. The Landscape Committee met on June 30. All members were present. The main item of discussion was the Spring walk-through report. The Committee decided that tree removal and pruning will be the primary focus of this year's work. Other projects will include additional wood chips on Devon Way near 378 and renovation of the plantings at 275-276. The proposal to heavily prune numerous Euonymus has been postponed until funds are available. A project suggested for the future is renovation of the plantings at the entrance to the Village.
2. Work approved:
Proposal #5541 (Spring walk-through) $12,836.00
HMHLD: Units 292, 293 Tree Removal $ 1,725.00
TOTAL $14,561.00
3. A balance of about $3,400 remains in the Landscape/Tree budget for the balance of the year.
4. Tree work will continue to be a significant Landscape expense for the Village.
George Manaker, Chairman
Landscape Committee Report - June 28, 2011
1. The Village Walk with Mike Neale took place on May 31. Participants were Priscilla Burt, Bobbie Castellotti, Bernice Leamy, George Manaker and Sandy Waldman. The Report has been received and will be discussed and projects determined at a meeting of the Devonshire Landscape Committee.
2. Trees have been removed at 281, 295, 308 and 319.

George Manaker, Chairman
Landscape Committee Report - May 24, 2011
1. Volunteers for the Landscape Committee, solicited at the Annual Meeting on April 20, 2011, were Karen Bayers, Bernice Leamy, George Manaker, Gloria Schmidt and Sandy Waldman. Additional volunteers are welcome.
2. An initial meeting was held on May 13 with Priscilla Burt and Bobbie Castellotti. Bobbie gave the Committee Landscape Guidelines, and discussed the budget. George Manaker was chosen Chairman. Mike Neale was also present and discussed the role of Hershey's Mill Landscaping in the maintenance of the landscape of Hershey's Mill in general, and Devonshire in particular.
3. The Village walk with Mike Neale to evaluate the plantings and discuss needs will take place on May 31. Following receipt of the report, we will meet to discuss, approve and implement projects for 2011.
4. Removal of an Alberta Spruce and Maple tree at 319 has been approved.
5. Residents are asked to review Section D, Grounds and Walks, of the Rules of the Village of Devonshire. Village Landscape Request Forms are available from George Manaker, and Bobbie Castellotti, Managing Agent.
George Manaker, Chairman
Landscape Committee Report - March 2011
It is with regret that Janet Freese and I are retiring as co-chairmen of the Landscape Committee.
The projects that are still to be done:
TREES - REMOVAL
Unit 295 - back
Unit 308 - front
Unit 319 - front
WHITE PINES
There are many white pines that are in bad shape in addition to the ones listed above and these should be addressed by either Mike or one of the tree people.
LANDSCAPING
Units 271-288 cul de sac - Center island needs to be redone - damage by plowing and removal of the trees has created an eyesore.
WALK THROUGH
The Spring walk through should be scheduled as soon as possible with Mike Neale so the work that is needed will get on Hershey's Mill Landscape schedule and will be done before winter sets in.
TREE TRIMMING - CONTINUED
The front half of the village from the 4-way stop to front entrance was not completed last year because of lack of money. Need to make sure trimming is done before the fire burning season starts, especially by those units who use their fire places.
Sincerely,
Janet Freese

LANDSCAPE
COMMITTEE REPORT
Not much to
report this month.
We asked Michael
for a second walk thru In September for his opinion on areas where the dead
shrubs were taken out. We liked
and approved his suggestions.
Greentree Tree
Service will be returning in next few weeks to take 2 trees down; a huge oak
tree that is dying behind Unit 325, an Evergreen with a lot of broken limbs
in front of Unit 308 causing roof problems and to remove one large dead
hanging tree limb behind unit 295.
When this is
finished, taking 1 and ½ days, it will be the end of our tree budget money.
Do not have any
residents’ requests pending.
We will be
planting spring bulbs this week and next, which will end our landscape
duties until next
Spring.

The Spring Walk-through is nearly completed. The areas that need to be reseeded will be done later in the fall when the growing season for grass is better. When we get the final bills from HMLD, we will then determine if we are able to replace some of the open areas in front of the units. We had added expenses from the Spring but we should have about $2,000 for foundation plantings that were lost because of the Winter or the very hard pruning that had to be done.
Trimming of the trees in front of the units is about ½ to 2/3 completed. Unfortunately, we lost a ½ day when a tree behind a unit was removed. Because the bucket truck could not go to the back of the unit, it was very labor intensive and we lost part of a day for trimming. We will still have enough funds after the final payment of the tree assessment from residents to have Greentree Landscaping do another day and a half. Greentree feels it will take closer to two days but we will be short by $250 to complete the work this Fall. They have done a great job of getting the limbs off the roads and away from chimneys.
We are planning to have the backs of the units over the patios and
awnings done in the Spring as soon as weather permits, so that the awnings
can go up in a timely manner. We
will also have to identify any dangerous trees in the rest of the Village.
We basically only got the first cul-de-sac done but we know there are
others that are in bad shape and if we have a winter like last year or
worse, we will be looking at even more expense for trees.
Janet Freese
Judy Snyder
The trimming of shrubs has
been completed by HMHLD.
Judy and I walked the
village, made a list of area's that needed to be readdressed.
The Walk Through projects
are in process of being done.
We will be contacting
Greentree to have the tree limbs on roofs and
carports pruned.

Few more trees need to be
removed some for safety reasons and couple due to storm in June.
We are addressing requests given to us by residents.

We had our Village
Walkthrough May 4, 2010 with Michael Neale of HMHLD. We made our Wish List,
and now will wait to receive the proposal of cost, have a committee meeting
to see what projects will be approved for this year.
May 3rd, Kevin of Greentree
Tree Service, Judy and I walked the first 2 cui de sac's on left coming in
entrance. He pointed out and marked in orange the tree's with most safety
issues.
Greentree Tree Service came
Wednesday May 12th, thur Monday the 17th, removed the marked tree's. About
11 or 12 tree.
May 14th, Ginnie, Judy and I
planted 2 flats of red and white impatiens at the two Devonshire signs, and
entrance pole light.
We heard from Angela Coty
Sunday May 16th! results of soil test is back.
She will be here June
14th, to rototill front of wall and do the planting she had recommended for
this area.
Ginnie Newlin's rain garden
was finished by Mike Neale on May 5th, which included
sod, steeping stones, grass
seed.
Ginnie planted native
plants, this area
is between Ginnie and Sally
Keates.
Snow damage has been cleaned
up. Lot of our shrubs have been damaged ..
Spring clean up was done,
summer pruning will be done once everything is finished blooming.
Due to seriousness of our
tree situation, we find it necessary to ask for assessment
of $70.00 per unit for total
of $7840, to continue trimming of trees, to protect the roofs and gutters
being clogged by falling debris, and the continue removal of trees.
Without this assessment,
tree work will be suspended for this year.
Respectfully submitted,
Judy Snyder and Janet Freese
The winter was
very harsh and a great deal of damage to the turf was done by the plow's.
Since a
lot of the damage was to the new sod that was installed last year, it will
probably take a couple of summers to get back to where we were last year.
Because
the
damage to our village was so extensive, we have recommended that Council
pursue some other contractors to get quotes. The snow removal expenses to
Devonshire was much less than to other villages in Hershey's Mill, but we
feel we are paying for the damage through other line items on our budget.
One project
that Landscaping has proposed is for the Entrance Wall. We have gotten
recommendations and a price from Eden Horticulture LLC to test the soil,
rejuvenate the area and do plantings to enhance this area.
This area has been degraded through
the years and we hope that by using new perennials we can eliminate some annuals.
Approval was given for Angela Cote to begin the Entrance Wall
Project.
.,
Our spring
walkthrough is scheduled for May 4th,
2010.
We have
received
some requests from residents and these will be addressed at that time.
If any
resident has any
requests
please get them to the committee so we can address them with Michael Neale
and the committee.
We try
to be comprehensive
in
looking at the plantings in the village,
but we may miss some, so
it is helpful if you let us know of your
concerns.
We make
our wish list up from Michael's suggestions, your input and the committee's
observances.
The
sooner you get your requests in, the sooner they will be addressed.
I
We have
contacted Greentree
Landscaping Inc,
to do the annual trimming and emergency tree service. We walked
<:
the property
with the Owner,
Mr.
Kevi", Logue last week to make recommendations
on trimming and identifying any problem trees.
He
suggested working on removal of aI/ white pines.
Kevin
did his
own walk
through
last
Friday,
few residents
came out and said hello, he said we have a very friendly village.
He has given
us, his list of trees that have
problems,
such as
girdling roots, trees too close to homes,
and trees with cavities.
The large Ash
Tree behind 289 unit was
removed because it was
leaning
over the unit and was done by Arader through HMHLD.
We are looking
for new members for the
landscape
Committee.
We meet
a couple of times a year with
the most time consuming event being the Spring Walkthrough. We have a large
and beautiful village which you miss by driving in and out.
We do some annual plantings and extra hands and
trowels are always welcomed.
We thank all
our committee members

We had a meeting with Angela
Cote March 11th, of Garden of Eden Landscaping.
She has made a drawing with
recommendations and placement of shrubs and perennials for the front wall.
We then asked her to give us a quote on the plantings she
suggested and for her to do the work.
She will get back to us with
her proposal.
She gave us suggestions for the
various other units we asked for and if given approval by committee will
submit to Hershery Mill Landscape to go ahead with this project.
We are in the process of
finding another tree service for Devonshire. We need to find someone who is
dependable, reasonable, and
trustworthy, since Judy nor I
know too much about trees.!
Sno-Pro has reset the bollards.
There is much sod to be replaced in the entire village.
Garage at unit 322A and the
mail box supports at Units 330 to 320 needs repaired.
Many lawns have been damaged
with large ruts. Unit 331 side and front yards has torn up curbing from road

Landscape Report for February 2010
We had our Landscape Committee
meeting January 27th, 2010.
We decided to ask Angie Coty for
her advice and ideas for our front wall entrance. What would do well in way of
shrubs, and perennials, so we will have to do a minimal planting of annuals each
year.
We also asked her advice for the two signs and a replacement for the
forsythia at unit 355, along garage wall where they are too overgrown, blocking
walkway and light sensor.
One project for coming year will be
replacing the Roddys at cui de sac 274 thru 292, where they are old and have
become unsightly. We also asked Angie for her advice on a replacement that grows
well in shade.
Back of unit 377 has evergreen tree
leaning on their house. We asked Mike Neale to check it out and advise us. It is
an tough spot with all snow, he can do it but may incur gutter damage. We gave
our ok to remove tree and will deal with gutter damage at later date. if damage
does occur.
There will be much clean up this spring. Lot of tree limbs and debris are everywhere. The snowplow contractor has done major damage to entire village. He apparently is someone who is not familiar with our village. We are looking forward to spring and getting our village back to looking good once again.

We are having our committee meeting
Wed. 1/27/10 to discuss our projects for the coming year.
We have one request pending, Unit
350
from last Nov./Dec. which will be addressed with Michael in the spring.
One concern we have is all the
damage that has been done by snowplow people.
The posts have been replanted, but
sod
must be replanted in spring, not
just seeded in affected areas, which there are a lot of.
They were asked to please not pile
all the snow in our cui de sec island, but they disrearged this request. We have
many areas in our cui de sec where the snow could have been piled.
Still having problems getting our
Tree Service to committ to a date to trim trees.

YEAR 2009 LANDSCAPE REPORT
DEVONSHIRE VILLAGE
The Spring Walk Through was conducted on May 18, 2009 with Mike
Neale, George Manaker and the Landscape Committee participating. Areas of
concern were identified and approved for completion during the summer months.
Hersheys' Mill Homeowners Landscape Division completed the work on October 13,
2009.
Many homeowner requests were forwarded to the committee and were
approved and completed throughout the summer. Tree trimming and removal was
extensive this summer. The work was done by Delchester Tree and Hersheys' Mill
Landscaping. There is still some trimming that needs to be addressed and will be
scheduled with Delchester Tree. We do not have a standing contract with
Delchester Tree service therefore we are limited as to when the work can be
accomplished.
We would like to extend our thanks to Mike Neale and his crew.
They have done an outstanding job and I hope that you all agree that the village
shows it. Also a big thank you to our committee: Omar and Eve Bailey, Sally
Keates, and Virginia Newlin. A special thank you to Helena Duszczyk who helped
water the annuals at the entrance.
We would like to invite anyone interested in improving the
appearance of our village to join our committee. Besides the Spring Walk Through,
we have one or two meetings in the summer. Often we contact the
committee by phone or e-mail eliminating the need for an actual meeting.

Most of the items were approved
and now awaiting HMHLD to start.
All requests from residence have

awaiting HMHLD.
Pruning was started week of June

Two stumps have been removed by
HMHLD, the area sodded or seeded.
To align the village mowing
schedule with Contract Agreement total cuttings and take advantage of lower
growth of turf HM Landscape will go to bi weekly mowing schedule starting week
of 7/20/09.
We asked Penco to make forms for
us, so we could leave them at doors of residents when they make a request, this
way they know we have been there checking out their requests.
We seem to have a problem with

JUNE 2009 LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE REPORT
We have had a lot of requests from
our residence for pruning of shrubs. Michael said we are on the schedule for
this week.
I asked if the large mowers were
necessary with all rain we are having, as they are ruining a lot of our grass
area's.
He said he would talk to the mowers
to be more careful.
Ginny Newlin also brought up this
concern.
We have planted Impatients
&
Zinnia's at wall and entrance signs.
Michael put "Deer Scram" on flowers along wall, he was going past when we hailed
him down. This is a "free" gift.
Delchester Tree Service came June 1 st, removed the tree on the bank behind Unit
342, large tree which took all morning. Then I sent him to Unit 378, where large
dead limb had fallen on her deck, from storm on weekend. He removed the tree and
trimmed other trees around her home. He also removed one limb overhanging the
roof of Unit 273.
The tree limbs were shredded, dumped at parking pad of Unit 295. then spread by
HMHLD at Unit 293.
They did not have time for stump removal, which is on Frank's list.
I called Delchester Tree June 12th, but have heard from him as of yet.
We received Michael's walk through proposal, having a meeting June 25th with the committee.

Mr. Huber of Delchester Tree
Service has been here three times in March to continue trimming.
Mr. Huber has identified three trees of concern.
The ash at unit 286 will need to be removed this year and will
necessitate a crane. A gum tree at
unit 344 will be watched and a maple between units 342-343 needs immediate
attention. The maple is on the
boundary of Mr. Porter who has been contacted but to date has not responded.
Because it is a dangerous situation we will take down the portion that is
jeopardizing
The Spring walkthrough with Mike Neale is pending and will be scheduled soon. If you have any landscaping requests, get them to Bobbie or the committee as soon as possible so they may be addressed at our committee meeting.

members. Our duties include the
Spring walkthrough and a few summer meetings to consider projects for the
village. We address any requests
from residents and determine if they are the responsibility of the village of
the resident. We also plant spring,
summer and fall flowers at the signs and the main entrance to the village.

the beauty of the village while driving by on
Janet and I want to thank Jennie Newlin, Omar Bailey, Carol Burns, George Manaker, and Dave Freese for all their help in planting the pansies before Easter.
